Kurnool Medical College was started in the year 1956. The birth of the Department of Medicine took place along with other basic departments in the year 1956.
To start with Paediatric ward also was a part of General Medicine department. The first HOD of the Medicine including Paediatrics was Padmabhushan Dr. Sripada Pinakapani who took over as HOD on 26th January 1957. In due course Paediatrics was created as separate department under Dr. Lingam Krishnaiah in the year 1958. II unit of the Medicine Department was started in the year 1958, III unit was added in the year 1959, IV unit was started in the year 1965. V and VI units were added to the department in the year 1997.
The Post Graduate Courses in Medicine started in the year 1962. The first batch of Post Graduate students Dr. Swaminath & Dr. P. sivaramaiah took their degrees in 1964. The Post Graduate alumni brought name and fame to the department in particular and to Kurnool Medical College in general by being accepted as Heads of Departments at National and International level. Number of post graduates have done various Super Specialities and are serving in reputed institutions in very important positions.
In due course Super speciality wings were started in the following order which were branched off from General Medicine, Cardiology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Neurology, Endocrinology
Though the Department lost its glamour after getting branched off to various sub-specialities, the department is extending great services and expending in various directions.
The Department at present under the guidance of Dr. K.Narasimhulu, MD, DTCD, boasts itself by conducting regular internet journal clubs and seminars, the first of its kind in Kurnool Medical College and the Department is unique in having a CD library. Presently the Head of the Department is showing interest and planning to upgrade Acute Medical Care, Intermediate Medical Care units. Department is full fledged with Critical Care unit and 24 hour Bio-chemical and General Lab, to Serve the needs of patients. And the Department is also coordinating with Anaesthesia Department to serve the needs of patients in Critical Care unit. At present medicine department is existing with seven medical wards both male and female wards including ID wards. Yearly 20 post graduates are admitted to the dept.
