The department of Cardiology was started with 16 beds under the able leadership of Dr. G.K. Sinha in 1971, with one professor and two Assistants, the team rendered excellent services.
Dr. Venkaiah Chowdary who succeeded Dr. Sinha continued offered his services till 1978. It was under the leadership of Dr. Ramakrishna Reddy, who headed the department for 22 years till the year 2000, the department underwent modernization. The contribution of Dr. K.S. Tirumalachari and C.B. Ranga Rao, who succeeded Dr. Reddy, was no small for the development of the department.
Golden era of the department started in 2003, when Dr.P.Chandrasekhar M.D D.M., took over the charge of as HOD of the department of cardiology. It was in the year 2003, when the then collector Sri Sai Prasad took keen interest in the development of the department. He sanctioned an amount of Rs. 55 lakhs using his discretion to set up ICCU and increase the bed strength to 40 including 10 bedded ICCU. The ICCU was made fully air-conditioned and critical equipment such as central monitor station, pulse oxymeters bedside ECG machines & Defibrillators were made available.
Kurnool Heart Foundation started by Dr.P.Chandrasekhar in 2003, has been organising public health awareness programs & free health camps for the benefit of the people.
Inception of invasive cardiac cathlab in 2008 after many tiresome efforts put in by the HOD, had paved the way for extending the services to the poor people of this region. Invasive procedures increased year by year, and took an exponential growth after Dr.Mohammad Ali S M.D D.M., joined as Assistant Professor, Cardiology in 2015.
Kairotic moment in services was the beginning of DM postgraduate course from the academic year 2016-17 under the dynamic leadership of Dr.P.Chandrasekhar. It has done commendable work in creating awareness among common public on preventive aspect of cardiac diseases by conducting free camps, public awareness programs. In invasive cardiology we have done more than 1000 invasive procedures including more than 250 angioplasties and 800 angiograms and permanent pacemakers in 2017. This year, till december 2018 we completed more than 1200 invasive procedures including more than 500 angioplasties. With an inpatient census of 400 per month and excellent ICCU care we achieved a remarkable improvement in patient care and with magnificient patient recovery rate of more than 90%. We possess state of art facilities like Invasive BP Monitoring, ABG, Transcutaneous Cerebral Oxygen Monitoring, Chestpain Triaging modern equipment to identify and appropriately manage chestpain patients. Our patient care had been rewarded with 2nd best speciality in NTR Vaidya Seva this year. Not only the inpatient services, academic research activities centered at patient's benefit are being conducted on acute MI in young patients, Peripartum Cardiomyopathy, Pulmonary Embolism, Prosthetic Valve Thrombosis and so on. It is not an exaggeration to state that our Cardiology department is devoted to serve and save lives of the poor and needy people of entire Rayalaseema region with utmost sincerity and dedication providing 24 X 7 round the clock patient care.
Regular academics are being conducted for D.M post graduate students not only in the form of seminars, case discussions but also in interventional cardiology & non-interventional modalities like 2D Echo, Holter monitoring etc., by Dr.P.Chandrasekhar & DR.Mohammed Ali.
